MSF Mali: treating the wounded from an upsurge in violence

24 September 2026 - Médecins Sans Frontières / Doctors Without Borders (MSF) is stepping up to respond to an influx of wounded people in central Mali, which is facing an increase in violence. MSF is supporting the Ministry of Health in providing care for the wounded and displaced.

On the 15th September, an attack by armed men on the village of Touara, in the Ségou region, left several people dead and triggered a wave of displacement. Twenty-five wounded people were taken to the hospital in Macina, where medicines and emergency kits provided by MSF made it possible to treat them.

MSF teams are preparing to launch a mobile clinic in Macina to meet the medical needs of nearly 2,000 displaced people, the majority of whom are women and children. The town is already hosting a large number of internally displaced people who have fled violence in surrounding areas.

Additionally, on the 16th September, a drone attack in the village of Guélédje left at least seven people dead and many others injured, according to witnesses. Four seriously injured people were taken to the Ténenkou Referral Health Center (CSREF). One of the victims died shortly after arrival, the others were treated on site by MSF medical teams. They suffered burns over their entire bodies.

Since June 2026, MSF has expanded its surgical capacity in Ténenkou by upgrading its medical facilities to treat victims of violence on site, as the security and humanitarian situation in the region continues to deteriorate.

MSF has been working in Ténenkou since 2016 to provide gynecological and maternity care, treat children under 15 and newborns, handle hospital emergencies, and support three other community health centers.
