Yemen: KSrelief and IOM Join Forces to Provide Safer Shelter and Vital Aid Amid Escalating Crisis

New York, 24 September 2026 – The King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) have signed a USD 2.6 million agreement to improve living conditions for internally displaced people and vulnerable host communities in Yemen.

The signing took place on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

"Families displaced by conflict in Yemen need a safe place to live, with privacy and protection from harsh weather. As renewed fighting forces more people from their homes, those needs are becoming more urgent. Our partnership with KSrelief will help families find safer shelter and regain some stability in their daily lives,” said Amy Pope, IOM Director General.

The agreement comes amid a sharp escalation in hostilities in Yemen that has driven new displacement and deepened humanitarian needs. In 2026, 22.3 million people – more than two thirds of the population – require humanitarian assistance and protection, while recent hostilities have displaced more than 134,000 people since early September.

Years of conflict and economic deterioration have already forced more than five million people to leave their homes, leaving many in inadequate shelter conditions and increasingly exposed to environmental hazards that continue to damage shelters and essential infrastructure.

Over the next 18 months, the project will directly support 1,900 crisis-affected families in Ma'rib, Ta’iz and Hodeidah with transitional shelters, essential household items and emergency shelter solutions, including safer, more durable shelter solutions designed to better withstand recurrent flooding, extreme weather and other hazards.

The intervention will help reduce overcrowding and protection risks, while improving privacy, safety and dignity for displaced families and host communities, with particular attention to women, girls, older people, persons with disabilities and female-headed households.

IOM will implement the project in coordination with local authorities and humanitarian partners, prioritizing households with the greatest needs and engaging affected communities throughout implementation.

IOM’s partnership with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has contributed over USD 140 million in humanitarian and recovery programming across multiple crises. In Yemen, this support has helped expand access to water and sanitation services, strengthen protection assistance, rehabilitate necessary infrastructure, and provide emergency shelter and essential non-food items for crisis-affected and displaced communities.
