SITUATION OVERVIEW

According to the latestinformationfrom the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management(UNGRD), as of September 16, 335 people have been reported dead, 105 remain missing,364 have been rescued, and 4,516 injured,while 486,917 people have been affected by the August 10, 2026 earthquake. In addition, 206,931 homes have been damaged and 36,478 destroyed, while 402 health facilities,4,431 educationalinstitutions,and 6,094 communitycentershavebeen affectedacross 16 departmentsand 500 municipalities. During the National Unified Command Post (PMU) on September 19, UNGRD consolidatedterritorial informationprovided by different sectors following the earthquake. According to the Unified Registry of Disaster-Affected Population (RUD), 364,670 familiesand 778,279 people had been registeredas of September 19. The registry also reports 84,855 habitablehomes, 104,037 uninhabitablehomes, 19,143 destroyedhomes,and 119,752 damagedhomes. Earthquake-related needs continue across severalsectors, includingshelter,health,water,sanitationand hygiene(WASH), and educationin emergencies. These needs are compounded by natural hazardsthat are further affectingvulnerablehouseholds. In severalmunicipalitiesin Chocó, IDEAM issuedhigh-level landslidehazard alertsassociatedwith intenseand prolonged rainfall,while forest firesremain activein three municipalitiesin Valledel Cauca. More than one month after the earthquake,and followingthe completion of search and rescue operations,governmentefforts are shifting towards comprehensive recovery, with a focus on updating information on affected populations, housing and livelihoods recovery, infrastructurerehabilitation,and the protectionof culturalheritage. In this context,the Ministryof Environmentactivateda support mechanismfor the recovery of Green Businesses(Negocios Verdes) affected by the earthquake,particularlyin areassuch as Chocó and Valle del Cauca. Meanwhile,the Ministryof Culture conductedfieldvisitsin Caldas, Risaralda,Quindío, and Valle del Cauca to assess damage and advance a reconstructionplan. The initialassessmentidentified40 nationally designatedculturalheritageassetsaffected.
